mixed feelings which feels strange because i really like kelly. indeed there are things here i like very much, particularly the formal mastery on display, and it’s hard not to fall into the tenderness of it all. but something about its serenity feels dishonest given the violence against, and theft of the lands of, indigenous peoples inherent in colonial spaces such as the one represented. there are suggestions of that violence, certainly, but i was left feeling a little uncomfortable…
