Bone Tomahawk

Bone Tomahawk ★★★★

“This is why frontier life is so difficult. Not because of the Indians or the elements but because of the idiots”

The bloody opening clearly declares itself as a genre-piece but following that, S. Craig Zahler makes the wise choice to slowly introduce us to the central characters. They all make up a nice little community and the way the threat is gradually increased lures the viewer into the bloody horror.

Because first and foremost, Bone Tomahawk is a sweet story about these characters, allowed to truly blossom in a beautifully shot piece of film. The deadpan comedy runs throughout, but never takes the upper hand over a character-dynamic serious enough for the film to keep its darkness. I do feel that the troglodytes are a bit too… Simple of a threat (their mysterious background is fine, but weighed against how much room they get in the plot I’m not fully on board) but that’s really a nit-pick in an otherwise fantastic blend of bloody genre film and striking character portraits.

Fourteenth watch of Bone-tober
