There's a lot to like about the live action Aladdin. Will Smith shines as the genie, the choreography and cinematography are lively and there's so much love you can feel from the set and costume design. It's clear a lot of reverence for the original animated film was present.
But I still can't help but feel that this movie is incredibly unnecessary. What's changed, Will Smith genie and some You Go Girl shit about Jasmine becoming sultan? It doesn't help that nearly every single new song is terrible and shoehorned in, and the opening Street Rat number was filmed really sloppily- it's the only scene in the film that had to be cranked slow and fast to correctly sync with the music and it is incredibly jarring.
Aladdin 2019: take it or leave it.
