Cruising ★★★★

y'know I do think the whole "this movie is homophobic" controversy around this film's release was some kind of heterosexual psyop to stop hollywood from making good and challenging movies about gay shit.

what is incredibly interesting about this film is the way that the film transitions from a first half that is in effect an incredibly stylish mystery thriller with an outcome that seems very obvious, to a second half that drifts and meanders to the point where it becomes a flurry of gazes and questions; tangled desires and floating identities. there does not need to be an explicit answer to "who did it", as homophobia, both institutional (especially in the police force) and internalised, rends its bloody path through everything and becomes an answer in itself.
