In theaters Oct. 10 (limited release)
Kill the Messenger stars Jeremy Renner as a real-life journalist Gary Webb who broke the story in the 90's of the CIA's involvement in drug-trafficking in the US in an effort to fund illegal wars abroad. Renner's conflicted lead gives most of the weight to the film, of which there is surprisingly not a lot of drama to jump off of. No car chases, no shadowy figures, no gunplay - mostly just paranoia and general sleuthing that takes a welcome turn into big-media character assassination towards the back half. Luckily, Renner's performance alone elevates it 1/2 star above average.
