Told in two parts, the first contains the best child acting of 2016 - hands down. Truly harrowing stuff. The back bit portraits a young person searching for identity despite privilege - and the mother who gives her all without expecting any accolades. Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman are in top form here, and the supporting cast follows suite. The unnecessary epilogue made me twitch a little in my seat but overall the feel-good film of the year.
Discussed on our Top 20 of 2016 episode of the Cinereelists podcast.
