HitFix reached out to top horror professionals with this question: "What are the ten (10) greatest horror films of all time?" As we received both ranked and unranked lists in response, the following system was used to keep the final tally as democratic as possible:
- Films were ordered based upon the number of mentions received on individual lists, regardless of ranking. "The Exorcist," for example, has been declared the greatest horror film of all time because it was included on more individual lists than any other film.
- In the event of a tie, rankings on individual lists were taken into account. For example, "Alien" and "The Thing" each…

HitFix reached out to top horror professionals with this question: "What are the ten (10) greatest horror films of all time?" As we received both ranked and unranked lists in response, the following system was used to keep the final tally as democratic as possible:
- Films were ordered based upon the number of mentions received on individual lists, regardless of ranking. "The Exorcist," for example, has been declared the greatest horror film of all time because it was included on more individual lists than any other film.
- In the event of a tie, rankings on individual lists were taken into account. For example, "Alien" and "The Thing" each received 35 mentions, but "Alien" scored a higher average placement on individual lists, thereby winning the tiebreaker. If a further tiebreaker was needed, honorable mentions were counted.
- Lists compiled by more than one individual (i.e the staff of Blumhouse) were weighted the same as lists compiled by a single individual.
- Though in rare instances two or more films were bundled into a single slot — technically a cheat — we ensured that those deviations did not affect the order of the rankings.
