Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings

shitty american directors: I spent millions on cgi to make a realistic wolf/lion/whatever
Tsui Hark: I spent a lot less than that on cgi to make a gigantic tongue monster, a buddhist monk riding a white gorilla, a golden dragon, and more unbelievable and surreal imagery than you'll see in any other movie this year.

    Starting the month off right!

  • Moonlight

Still blows my mind that this movie that's more indebted to european and chinese art cinema than to anything hollywood ever made, telling a small-scale, deeply personal story about a black man without any white savior nonsense, actually won the oscar.

    Point Break

The best American example of that unstoppable late 80s-early 90s mix of crisp action and over the top melodrama that my favorite style of movie comfort food.

  • BlacKkKlansman

Captures a certain laugh to keep from crying/screaming feeling I've had a lot the past couple years, and then the end just snatches that laughter right away, leaving only the pain underneath

Agnes Varda spins a tale of two women who, rejected their own patriarchal families, each slowly build their community, groups of women who support each other: Suzanne at the family planning center, Pomme with the touring band. Varda celebrates the power of female friendships with the sort of bright colors and music it deserves.
That Papa Engels song is a banger, anybody got a link for it? does this band exist?

Really solid, love keanu's turn as a sneering rich villain and tiger chen delivers a great performamce. Just one thing, you're really gonna bring iko uwais out for this movie and then not even give him a full fight? Come on keanu, you should know better than that

  • Jurassic Park

    Jurassic Park

Need the dinosaurs to have feathers and screech like birds, but I guess when dinosaurs look ridiculous it changes the tone. Loved that a chaos mathematician is a big hot-shot celeb, but never really found myself caring about the characters, first half really dragged.
