2017 to this point, has kinda been the year of the overrated for me. Baby Driver, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 are all 2017 blockbuster films that had a ton of hype and critical praise that all left me feeling underwhelmed. Now you can add War for the Planet of the Apes to that list. Don't get me wrong, I liked all of these films to the tune of at least 3 stars. I just didn't love any of them like most people seemed too. My main issues with this film were the lack of WAR, an underdeveloped villain (Woody Harrelson), and the human plot device/child with the apes.
On the positive side, Andy Serkis is phenomenal as Caesar and the special effects and cinematography are top notch. Overall it was better from a technical standpoint than it was plot wise.
