Godzilla: King of the Monsters ★★★

Having a family at the centre of the story helps make sense of the vast canvas of monster mayhem. The dialogue is cliched and melodramatic, but I liked the idea that humans are in the fight and not bystanders, and it made me emotional, so it worked for me at some level beneath the silliness. When Big G gives you that stare, it’s clear he’s not messing around. It’s also a fat metaphor for the unfolding climate catastrophe. It just about works because of some of the ideas and all the monster fights. Just.
