If you like this film, the chances are I like you, and if you don’t? Well fair enough, but you should cos it’s awesome :D
But seriously I think this is a genuinely really good film, despite its flaws. It doesn’t have as great pacing as the first two films, and it feels really different for some reason and I can’t quite place it. It’s not a good thing either, but I just can’t figure out what it is that makes it feel that way. A lot of the CGI does feel fake, weirdly worse than it’s predecessor Spider-Man 2, and it does have too many villains. It’s clear that Raimi didn’t really wanna do Venom, but at the end of the day I do still think it was handled well.
The themes in this film carry it above all of its flaws, and they’re some genuinely resonant ones, maybe some of the best in the trilogy. I connect more with those in SM2, but these are just so great as per usual. Elfman’s score is another incredible one, and I do believe some of the effects are really good.
When I say that I mean like the stuff with Venom, because the symbiote and the Venom suit look SO GOOD, even if Grace’s voice fits horrendously. So does Peter’s black suit come to think of it. When you look past the cheesiness that is sometimes too cheesy (now dig on thisss, emo Peter dancing), there’s actually a really decent message being told about Peter’s inner demons being reflected throughout, and how at the end of the day we can always do the right thing instead of giving into them. Besides, if Peter Parker got a hold of a suit and power like that, he would 100% thinking dancing down the street like that would be badass, so it actually really fits his character if anything.
The action scenes feel bigger in scale, and it feels more early MCU than it does Raimi, but in a good way, seems as it does still manage to bring the emotion within the conclusion to the three movie build up we’ve had between Harry and Peter. I also really don’t hate MJ in this, like she’s kinda genuinely justified for how she acts. I don’t see why everyone despised her so much here?
Mum gave it an 8/10, her favourite of the trilogy! :)
Spider-Man 3 is unironically great, and even though most don’t love the execution and overstuffing of villains, the themes, characters and charm make this yet another awesome outing from Sam Raimi.
It’s the choices that make us who we are, and we can always choose the right thing
