  • The Evil Dead

    The Evil Dead

The best way to describe The Evil Dead is as Ash’s - the lead’s - lavishly over-the-top nightmare. Raimi’s milk-spewing demons are a subversion of a common horror villain as they don’t follow any consistent logic allowing Raimi to use The Evil Dead as a vehicle for his directorial antics.

Ultimately, The Evil Dead is really a precursor to Raimi’s future more ambitious work – though it’s still a fun ride.

    The 400 Blows

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

A story about holding on to childhood innocence as the harsh world slowly crushes us. Instead of a straight forward narrative, Truffaut employs an array of rich vignettes from the naive perspective of a child - the consequences of which leads to tragedy.

All the turmoil Antoine endures only leads to a final cathartic run - an attempt to escape his life and recapture the levity of his childhood.

It's a brilliant sequence in a brilliant movie.

    Halloween II

The humanization of Michael Myers offers a much needed variation to the slasher genre – changing to the vapid killing spree to a desperate mending of a fractured past. The psychological torment that defines the lives of the two leads creates a surreal and brutal journey as they get pushed closer together.

All of this works because of the film’s masterful atmosphere. Zombie makes the film feel not only dark but unforgiving.

    A Quiet Place

Krasinski presents some interesting ideas but they don't really develop enough or lead anywhere too interesting.

Though, overall I felt A Quiet Place was tense and enjoyable, and a perfect popcorn movie with some friends. There's loads of moments that are dumb enough to pick apart afterwards, but not dumb enough to take you out of the movie.
