Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

    Ok A- What the fuck?

B- This is a work of art that is entirely and thoroughly fascinating. "Its off-the-charts screwiness obscures virtually all shortcomings." (Schrager)

Perfume is a masterfully directed, acted and shot fairy-tale period thriller thing that like any complex scent has many notes to experience. It is at times sensual, surreal, whimsical, darkly comic (the kind of comedy that makes you feel bad about laughing. The cat and "have you no faith?" followed by the nun stand…

  • Roma

I've been sitting here for the past half hour trying to gather my thoughts because I have so much I want to say but no idea how to say it. It's only a while after you're done watching Roma that the sheer weight of what you've just seen hits you. It's a film so ambitious it borders on narcissitic, but Cuaron somehow manages to pull it off and leave us with what is undoubtedly the best movie of the year.…

High concept that is interesting and ambitious but unfortunately poorly executed. It's not psychological thriller enough for a psychological thriller or superhero enough for a superhero movie and ends up being underwhelming. I knew some M. Night style twists were coming but I was still caught off guard and enjoyed them; although I understand why some people might not. It's a love it or hate it kind of thing and they're a bit overindulgent.

It's clear that this is a…

    Die Hard 2

Still a classic; despite cheesiness, plot holes, ex machinas and all. Now with bigger and badder firefights and things that go boom!

The villains are largely forgettable in this one, but Bruce Willis is great. Shoutout to Dennis Franz too.

It Happened One Night was a pleasant surprise for me. I don't usually watch many classics and I thought this would be very outdated and while the technical aspects obviously are; the character dynamics, script and certainly the romance and comedy hold up very well. You know a film is doing it right when it can make you laugh almost a century later!

This is a vintage romantic comedy that you can tell has inspired a lot of…

    Green Book

Maybe I just have shit taste in movies, but (as with Bohemian Rhapsody) I really loved this one.

I saw this in a nearly empty theatre on my own and I'm glad I did because it had me laughing out loud, crying or both. Mahershala Ali's performance is great and deserves its Oscar nomination and so is Viggo Mortensen's. His character is played maybe a bit too stereotypically but he manages to pull it off. I also liked the evolution…
