great drama out of a misunderstanding. stepping on a fumi-e is not apostatizing (in this the torturers are correct when they say it's just an outward gesture without necessarily reflecting what is in one's heart). apostatizing means effectively renouncing your faith and changing your life accordingly. of course stepping on a fumi-e would have devastating effects on the morale of the community, but the fear of it meaning anything more than our human weakness/cowardice need not consume the protagonist's soul…
