I agree with other reviewers about the similarities to Monsieur Hulot's Holiday which came out the previous year but this one has a fun plot as well. A lot of the comedy still works. This would be a good film for Wes Anderson to remake, it reminded me a bit of Moonrise Kingdom. Loved the war between the kids and the adults and the drowning man that keeps getting mistaken for a friendly waving tourist. Loved the memorable bittersweet ending!

I want to commend the filmmakers for being able to capture those elusive Chicagoland mountains. Nice opening radio-throwback to Medium Cool but the coup-de-grace was the "Harry Lime Lives" graffiti in the sewer! Added 1/2 star for the easter eggs. 3400 East does not exist - anywhere - in these parts. Chicago is in Missouri. Yes. In California, the Midwest is just all bundled together in one place.

Though not apparent during the first 20 minutes or so this turned into one of the funniest black comedies in memory. A man who can't hurt a fly becomes a public executioner out of financial necessity. Honey, let's kill two birds with one stone and combine our honeymoon with my first execution. If this story has been remade since the 60s it must have been an awful remake because I've never heard of it. The Coen's need to tackle this one again.

This is one of the most manic movies I've seen. There's so much going on at any one time. There are two ongoing stories, one is simple the other is extravagant (and hilarious) and they often collide. A true ensemble picture with multiple disparate conversations or things going on at the same time. You really need to see it at least twice to catch everything - it's a very dense film both visually and aurally. Comedies generally do not age…
