    The Northman

    ★★★★½

The Northman is a film based on Hamlet but it is in a viking setting and it completely works. Robert Eggers went all out here and it pays off. Almost every technical aspect in the film is masterful from it’s stunning cinematography to the dark yet mystical atmosphere built from the lighting and the thundering celtic folk score. The acting is great with easy highlights being Alexander Skarsgård and Nicole Kidman (especially in that one scene). The revenge filled story…

    Barking Dogs Never Bite

    ★★★★

Barking Dogs Never Bite may not be Bong Joon-ho’s best film but it is still a stellar debut. All of his qualities are present here such as his incredible camerawork, use of misdirection and the blending of genres. In this film, he mixes the genre dark comedy with thriller and by themselves, each genre is done very well but these two distinct tones do occasionally clash. Obviously, he improves this later on with Parasite or Mother. Even then, this film…

    Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers

    ★★

How does this film have worse animation than Roger Rabbit which came out over 30 years ago? It looks so unnatural and it never looked like they were actually there interacting with the real world. The film was mostly painfully unfunny aside from a couple decent jokes such as Ugly Sonic and Cats. Referential humour does very little for me and it always feels like it is trying to get a cheap laugh. The dialogue is horrendously basic and the…

    Paddleton

    ★★★★

Definitely one of the more underrated movies in recent years. Mark Duplass and Ray Romano are both surprisingly excellent in this film as they typically known for more comedic roles. Paddleton has some moments of comedy but it works in the more dramatic sections. Particularly, in the last 30 minutes which were painful but still beautifully acted and filmed. This sequence was made so much more impactful by the masterful writing that made these characters relationship so natural and believable.…

    Nightmare Alley

    ★★★★½

Nightmare Alley is a thrilling crime drama with an extremely captivating main character, stunning cinematography and a brilliantly tense final act. The set design is great especially during the carnival scenes. Bradley Cooper steals the show as Stan. His character’s story is extremely entertaining with his rise and with his eventual fall. His psychology and his charisma never fails to keep him interesting despite him making questionable decisions and then digging himself into a hole he cannot get out of.…
