    The Northman

    ★★★★½

The Northman is a film based on Hamlet but it is in a viking setting and it completely works. Robert Eggers went all out here and it pays off. Almost every technical aspect in the film is masterful from it’s stunning cinematography to the dark yet mystical atmosphere built from the lighting and the thundering celtic folk score. The acting is great with easy highlights being Alexander Skarsgård and Nicole Kidman (especially in that one scene). The revenge filled story…

    Barking Dogs Never Bite

    ★★★★

Barking Dogs Never Bite may not be Bong Joon-ho’s best film but it is still a stellar debut. All of his qualities are present here such as his incredible camerawork, use of misdirection and the blending of genres. In this film, he mixes the genre dark comedy with thriller and by themselves, each genre is done very well but these two distinct tones do occasionally clash. Obviously, he improves this later on with Parasite or Mother. Even then, this film…

    Seoul Station

    ★½

Seoul Station has the same flaws as Train to Busan but so much worse. Characters make idiotic decisions all the time, contrived plot points and awful dialogue.

In addition to this though, Seoul Station also contains some less than stellar animation and voice acting that is beyond dreadful. They either scream, shout, cry and it gets annoying real fast with it rarely ever sounding believable.

Unlike Train to Busan, the film fails at creating an emotional through line with a…

    Train to Busan

    ★★★

This film really fucking annoys me. It was so close to being excellent with it’s solid emotional core and it’s creative and exciting action sequences that are intense as all hell.

However, it is a zombie film, so it is contractually obliged to contain a large amounts aggressively idiotic characters and moments. Like, Jesus Christ, some of these people on the train are more braindead than the actual fucking zombies. What also does not help is that the complete buffoonery…

    Nightmare Alley

    ★★★★½

Nightmare Alley is a thrilling crime drama with an extremely captivating main character, stunning cinematography and a brilliantly tense final act. The set design is great especially during the carnival scenes. Bradley Cooper steals the show as Stan. His character’s story is extremely entertaining with his rise and with his eventual fall. His psychology and his charisma never fails to keep him interesting despite him making questionable decisions and then digging himself into a hole he cannot get out of.…
