It may be futile and impossible, but at least I've devoted my entire life to it.

  • JFK

There are a lot of details in Oliver Stone’s 1991 paranoid conspiracy masterpiece JFK that are not true. There are many inventions, fantasies, unprovable theories, delusions, rumors and misrepresentations. After all, Stone himself described the film as a “counter-myth” to the Warren Commission’s “fictional-myth.”  In real life, Jim Garrison’s case against Clay Shaw crumbled in court. Part of the magic of cinema is being able to ensure the nobility of one’s actions is more apparent after the fact than it…

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

It’s fascinating to me that the novel was released over 10 years before the film because the story feels so right for 1975. The Man (capital T, capital M) had seemingly won by then. The individualism and counter-culture of the previous decade were on life support. The country needed McMurphy for that proverbial shot in the arm.

It’s a world class performance from the greatest ever combination actor/movie star. There have been better actors and there have (maybe) been better…

    The Wicker Man

An excellent sense of time and place, immaculately crafted, building towards an iconic conclusion that works better than 99.9% of horror endings. Does not rely on blood & guts or violence or jump scares, just building dread and the growing realization that you might in fact be the fool all along.

Absolutely hilarious how much of the trivia surrounding this film involves Britt Ekland - from her trashing the filming locations to her voice being dubbed to her body double to Rod Stewart trying to block the release of the film.

    Blown Away

This is an instant classic and I can’t believe I’ve never seen it before.

Several legitimate spit-take moments and lines of dialogue. Just an incredibly terrible, ultra-sleazy piece of early 90s nostalgia starring both Coreys and Nicole Eggert.

Loads of sex and nudity, almost no sign of real acting or believability, a story that is so stupid that I couldn’t help but love every second of it and a truly unforgettable ending. The fact that this film exists is a real treat and I just know that I will be revisiting it repeatedly in the future.
