Don't Look Up

Don't Look Up ★★★½

Everyone, everyone! I can fix this movie. The asteroid has 1 week to hit. Problem solved. It's not overly long. Cut out the biting satire that is trite and unfunny. Leave the biting satire that's hilarious. Pare down some non-essential characters and relationships.

Despite some of my misgivings I actually enjoyed most of this. Mark Rylance, I love you, you're so weird. Leo, another epic performance, thank you. Ariana Grande, I'm ambivalent about you but that song killed me. And JLaw, this isn't the best but it's a pretty good start toward resuming your career. And Meryl Streep's last scene was the pièce de résistance. It's the funniest moment of the entire film because with Streep it's so inappropriate but for her character, so fitting. I wanted more of that level of insanity throughout.

One last note, the delightful action in the final part of the film once the meteor hits is the best part. So, a little less satire, a little more world destruction. Or maybe I'm just a sadist.
