Spiritual sequel to Persona. Bergman knew how to make (shot) duration translate to something like anxiety, dread, a kind of mounting pressure against your brain. The things he did with Welles-ian deep-focus compositions, the refusal to reverse-shot or eyeline-match, and abstracted memories skirting the space between the real and the imagined... Few others have been able to have an idea that's, on its own, a harrowing mindf*ck, articulate that idea verbally, and then serve up image after image after image that enacts that idea so profoundly. I can only think of Tarkovsky as peer...
