Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion

Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion ★★½

Apparently I'm in the minority here, but damn that felt pretentious and quite empty.
I usually am a sucker for bizarre movies that turn into gigantic psychological mindfucks, but that one wasn't grounded on anything else than the very simple, very much already done over and over concept of "I am a teenage boy and I don't know what to do with my desires/hate for women/myself".
One of my main problems was also that the theme could still have worked if the sexual imagery was kept in the right places. Sometimes it made sense (even when it was oh so unsubtle), but sometimes it was also very uncalled for and made the film look like a self-indulgent work of a guy who wanted to draw underage porn but felt like he was above it and needed to cover it with art and random religious imagery.

Still, 2.5 stars for the care that went into the imagery and animation of the last bit, I respect that.

And 5 stars for the opening of the series, which is a real banger.
