    From reading about the opera it was based on, the story was originally structured as a flashback, Fenella (the titular role) introduced in the midst of her escape from prison and her recounting Alfonso’s seduction of her to his wife Elvire, and Fenella’s brother Masaniello fighting for liberty after learning of what has happened to her, and Pietro (despite loving Fenella in vain) actually poisoning Masaniello as a political retaliation for Masaniello’s choosing to spare them.
