My god, it's full of stars. The monolith, the apotheosis of all motion pictures and a formal encyclopedia of cinematic science fiction which serves as the fifty year (and counting) foundation of the entire genre. An immense, ominous, surprisingly funny and awe inspiring opus. As with other theatrical experiences of visual wonders I have had, what really stands out is the sound, both in the alternately breathy and mechanical sound mixing as well as the operatic sweep of the score. 2001: A Space Odyssey is a musically driven experience from the all-star selection of classical needle drops to the shrill electronics and tribal shrieks which create a varied and oppressive soundscape akin to that of The Shining or A Clockwork Orange. From any angle, a massive achievement and a singular viewing experience that leaves you floored each time.
