Kiarostami might be my favorite filmmaker of all time. Through the Olive Trees, especially, is an excellent example of why I feel that way. Poetry and meta-cinema combine in this film, reminding me of Makhmalbaf's A Moment of Innocence. However, Kiarostami is capable of maintaining the serenity and subtleness of the plot - offering you so many elements to admire and reflect upon.
    Truly a chef d'oevre, truly a masterpiece.

There are two main reasons why this film is important. The first is the excellent writing, acting, directing that highlight a serious social issue. The second is the fact that no one in the industry had the b*lls to invest in it. John Cassavetes is a legend.

The reason why I think this film is exceptional is simple; it's one of the most creative films I've seen in my life. What this film creates above anything else is a debate. It forces you to disseminate the information and try to find an interpretation or an explanation. Who is Elisabeth Vogler? Who is Alma? What's real and what's not? So many questions that could be answered in almost infinite ways.

Only when you listen to the feelings, and not just the words, will the film open up to you and reveal what's at its core - a story about loss and guilt.

My only problem with this film - and it's not really like a huge problem cause it still merits a 10 nonetheless - is that it wasn't shot in Lebanon. I feel like if it had been that way, the story would've turned out to be much more poignant. But hey, a 10 is a 10...
