Really devastating. This is the kind of movie that I was glad to watch alone, so I could cry not just in the theater but on the drive home. I'm not sure if the film, especially the ending, is hopeful or not. Not particularly, maybe not at all. Yet I was a bit more grateful for the beautiful day that I was living in and thought, maybe I should also go for a walk in the park.
When I saw The Rider by myself having only seen the poster and the director's name, a thought crossed through my mind - why did this *Chinese female* director make a movie about cowboys? It was not an innocuous question. There was a hint of bitterness, because minority voices are never heard enough.
