Don't be tricked by the awful title! This is a charming romantic movie and a beautiful love letter to the island of Guernsey, which I'd never heard of before sitting down to watch this on a whim. I also didn't know anything about German occupation of British islands during WW2, so I liked learning more about the history of the war from an angle I was not aware of. I also appreciated the moral complexity in Elizabeth's relationship with Christian, with the film allowing the audience to make their own judgements on a complicated and morally ambiguous situation, though I did want the film to go deeper into that specific plot point. On the whole though this is a really sweet film that builds its romantic plot splendidly.
