Score another one for the benefits of going into a movie completely cold. All I knew about this before I saw it was: Its title, that it was directed by Takashi Miike, and that today was my last chance to see it in theaters. Imagine my delighted surprise when I found out it was seasonally appropriate as well, since many of the yakuza gangsters in this double as blood-sucking vampires. This provides an economic metaphor that Miike seems to approach with exactly the right amounts of seriousness and silliness, and a series of escalating action blow-outs that culminate in a somehow entertainingly static anticlimax followed by a literally note-perfect ending. This is exactly what I needed.
