A very well done teen-weepie - some hokey moments, but Woodley grounds everything, and some competent direction to go with a strong script makes this an emotional roller coaster.

As good a "video game movie" (in terms of form) as we are ever going to get, and while that bar isn't high to clear, Liman has actually produced the most fun summer blockbuster of the year so far. Smartly written, with more genuine laughs than most studio comedies in recent years. Found the third act problematic on first watch, and significantly less fun than the first 2/3s, but it's a necessary evil in order to raise the stakes, and more a comment on how good the LIVE-DIE-REPEAT section is than an indictment of the conclusion.

The arc of human lives = the aging of wine. Graceful in peaking, yet sharp in decline. Peaks must be seized upon, lest degradation take hold. Payne provides a character in Giammati with so much crushing humanity that the (sometimes) broad gags feel more honest than they would in a lesser film. Lush score and editing provide a serene and gorgeous portrait of joy and poignant sadness as the characters attempt to find life's meaning in the California countryside.

Too dense to grasp all it's layers on first viewing, but god what a "head" trip. Goodman has never been better, and the Coens have a vice grip on the tone - equally hilarious, tense, and claustrophobic. Will definitely need to give this another visit soon.
