Weil ich vorher nichts über GOTHIC wusste, hat mich völlig überrascht, dass es um Mary Shelleys Biografie geht, die zu einer Art Jane Austen Horror Picture Show stilisiert wird. Und verrückterweise fühlt es sich passend an. Mary Shelley war immerhin eine Frau mit einem sehr offenem, modernen Weltbild, das höflich ausgedrückt als revolutionär galt. Und sie umgab sich mit dazu passenden Freigeistern ihrer Zeit. Auch wenn die Details hier komplett auf die Spitze getrieben werden, ist zumindest die Rahmenhandlung historisch verbürgt.

GOTHIC ist mit oft phantasievollen Horrorelementen und sexueller Spannung angereichert. Es geht um eine einzige Nacht, die völlig aus dem Ruder läuft. Ich hatte vorher aus irgendeinem Grund gedacht, es wäre eine Anthologie, aber dass die Charaktere sich Gruselgeschichten erzählen, spielt eher eine Nebenrolle.

Leider fiel mir der Zugang etwas schwierig, weil die Dialoge häufig eine Spur zu gestellt und die Szenen teilweise etwas zusammenhanglos wirken. Dafür mochte ich den Stil und generell die Idee, Mary Shelley in dieser kreativen Form einen Film zu widmen.

Because I didn't know anything about GOTHIC beforehand, I was completely surprised to find out that it's about Mary Shelley's biography - stylized into a sort of Jane Austen Horror Picture Show. And crazy enough, this feels fitting. Mary Shelley was, after all, a woman with a very open-minded, modern worldview that was, to put it politely, considered revolutionary. And she surrounded herself with free spirits of her time to go with it. Even if the details here are pushed completely to the extreme, at least the frame story is historically verified.

GOTHIC is filled with often wildly imaginative horror elements and sexual tension. It's about a single night that goes completely off the rails. I had previously thought it was an anthology for some reason, but the characters telling each other scary stories ist just a small part.

Unfortunately, I found it a bit difficult to get into, because the dialogues are often a bit too forced and the scenes sometimes seem a bit disconnected. But I liked the style and the idea in general to dedicate a film to Mary Shelley in this creative form.
