138 Minuten sind für die Fortsetzung eines handlungsarmen Low Budget Films über einen Killerclown (mehr dazu hier) auch dann eine mutige Ansage, wenn jener durch saftige Bluteffekte zu beeindruckend wusste. Aber TERRIFIER 2 überrascht damit, dass er sich in allen Belangen gesteigert hat!

Er sieht nicht mehr aus wie ein schmuddeliges Handyvideo, sondern wie so ein richtiger Film. Die Schauspieler*innen - und allen voran die Hauptdarstellerin - dürfen sich tatsächlich als solche bezeichnen. Art der Clown hat seine Mischung aus Bedrohlichkeit und makabrem Humor perfektioniert. Und es gibt diesmal tatsächlich eine ordentliche Handlung.

An dieser hat mir vor allem gefallen, dass wir einen guten Spannungsbogen bekommen, der in seinen besten Momenten an Nightmare on Elm Street erinnert. Bevor Art die Protagonistin jagen und bluten lassen darf, sucht er sie in ihren Träumen heim, stalkt sie beim Einkaufen und stellt ihrer Freundin nach. Es gibt gruselige Momente, aber trotzdem wird schon früh etabliert, auf welches Maß an Brutalität man sich einstellen sollte. Und bei allen Clownsnasen, das ist wahrlich nicht ohne. TERRIFIER 2 ist mit zunehmender Laufzeit mehr Splatterorgie als Mainstreamhorror, und deshalb kann ich verstehen, dass er bei seinem Kinostart für verstörte Reaktionen gesorgt hat. Wer mit Braindead aufgewachsen ist, wird die handgemachten Effekte genießen können... wem ein zermatschtes Gesicht oder herausgerissene Augen schon unangenehm sind, wird an diesem Film sehr wahrscheinlich keine Freude haben. Vor allem weil er eben trotz Clown nicht als Komödie inszeniert ist.

Was ich etwas schade fand, war, dass trotz der langen (meiner Meinung nach etwas zu langen) Laufzeit, die vielversprechend aufgebaute Lore um den Vater und das Schwert nicht befriedigend aufgelöst wird. Ich erwarte ja nicht, dass direkt alles erklärt wird... aber wenn man schon derart neugierig gemacht wird, sollte einem zumindest irgendetwas gegeben werden. Ich habe das Gefühl, dass wir in den Fortsetzungen mehr zu den Hintergründen erfahren werden, aber sich komplett darauf verlassen zu müssen, fühlt sich etwas unfair an.

Trotzdem hatte ich eine gute Zeit, denn solche Horrorfilme sind selten. Ich vertraue einfach darauf, dass in einer eventuellen Fortsetzung die aufgeworfenen Fragen zumindest zum Teil aufgegriffen werden, und darauf freue ich mich. Und natürlich auf mehr kreative Verstümmelungen, bei denen ich mich fasziniert fragen kann, wie sie das wohl gemacht haben.

138 minutes are a bold challenge for the sequel of a rather plotless low budget movie about a killer clown (read more here), even if that one knew how to impress with juicy gore effects. But TERRIFIER 2 surprises with how it has improved in all aspects!

It no longer looks like a grungy mobile phone video, but like a real movie. The actors and actresses - and especially the leading one - can actually call themselves this. Art the Clown has perfected his mixture of intimidation and macabre humor. And there is actually a decent plot this time.

What I liked most about the plit is how we get a good arc of suspense, reminiscent of Nightmare on Elm Street in its best moments. Before Art is allowed to hunt down the protagonist and make her bleed, he haunts her dreams, stalks her while shopping, and threatens her friend. There are creepy moments, but still, it's established early on what level of brutality you should prepare for. Holy clown noses, this violence is something else. TERRIFIER 2 is more splatter orgy than mainstream horror, so I can understand why it caused upset reactions from some moviegoers upon its theatrical release. Those who grew up with Braindead will enjoy the handmade effects... those who are already uncomfortable with a squished face or ripped out eyes will most likely not enjoy this film. Especially because it is not a comedy.

What I found a bit unfortunate was that despite the long (in my opinion a bit too long) running time, the promisingly built up lore about the father and the sword is not satisfyingly resolved. I don't expect everything to be explained... but if you're made curious like that, you should at least be given something in the end. I have a feeling we'll learn more about the backstory in the sequels, but having to rely completely on that doesn't feel fair.

Still, I had a good time because horror films like this are rare. I just trust that in an eventual sequel, the some of the questions raised will be addressed at least in part, and that's what I'm looking forward to. And, of course, to more creative mutilations that leave me wondering in fascination how they did it.
