Hier bekommt man genau das geboten, was einem in der ersten Minute angekündigt wird: Vier Menschen begeben sich in ein verlassenes Tunnelsystem unter Sidney, und nicht alle werden es heil zurück an die Oberfläche schaffen. THE TUNNEL ist damit ein besonders geradliniger Vertreter des Found Footage Genres, denn ohne Twists liefert er ab, was man von dem Setting erwartet. Glücklicherweise ist eben dieses Setting aber auch seine Stärke, denn dass er vor Ort in den Tunneln gedreht wurde, trägt ungemein zur Atmosphäre bei. Und für ein Regiedebut und das geringe Budget, das durch Crowdfunding zusammen getragen wurde, sieht das alles ansehlich aus. Natürlich nach Found Footage Maßstäben. Im Dunkeln sieht man trotzdem nur wenig, aber das gehört dazu.

Mir hat der Film gefallen, allerdings sollte man sich dessen bewusst sein, dass die Handlung nicht viel mehr her gibt, als das, was ich hier eben zusammengefasst habe. Natürlich stößt die Gruppe in den dunklen Gängen auf etwas, dem man lieber nicht begegnet wäre.

Andere Filme bieten mehr kreative Ideen, wobei mir als erstes Beispiel As Above, So Below (Katakomben) einfällt, in dem die Unterwelt von Paris statt Sidney erforscht wird. Das gefiel mir persönlich noch eine Spur besser, aber THE TUNNEL braucht sich nicht zu verstecken und ist gerade für Found Footage Puristen definititv einen Blick wert. Und die Charaktere nerven kaum, was eher selten ist.

You get exactly what is promised to you in the first minute: Four people go into an abandoned tunnel system under Sidney, and not all of them will make it back to the surface in one piece. This makes THE TUNNEL a particularly straightforward example of the found footage genre, as it delivers what you'd expect from the setting without any twists. Fortunately, this very setting is also its strength, as the fact that it was shot on location in the tunnels adds immensely to the atmosphere. And for a directorial debut and the low budget, which was gathered through crowdfunding, it all looks respectable. By found footage standards, of course. In the dark, you still see very little, but that's a typical thing.

I liked the movie, but you should be aware that the plot doesn't offer much more than what I've just summarized above. Of course, the group encounters something in the dark tunnels that you would rather not have run into.

Other films provide more creative ideas, the first example that comes to mind being As Above, So Below, in which the underworld of Paris is explored instead of Sidney.
I personally liked that one a bit more, but THE TUNNEL doesn't need to hide and is definitely worth a look, especially for found footage purists. And the characters are not really annoying, which is rather rare.
