The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg ★★★★½

It’s movies like this that make me wish I spoke French.
I can see how heavily this influenced Damien Chazelle, and while it has influences of its own the choice to sing all the dialogue is so unique and it really hooks you in once you settle into its groove.

Wonderful performances, Catherine Deneuve is a legend, and the sumptuous pastel colours and costume/production design are really what put it over the top for me.

A film hasn’t slapped me this hard in the face with colour since Suspiria
